Common questions
Fifteen things readers ask most often, with short answers.
01Are you a balloon operator?
No. This site is an independent, non-commercial reader written by one retired chase-crew chief. The site does not fly balloons, does not own a basket, does not sell flights and does not take payments. For a flight the traveller needs an operator, which is chosen from independent reviews and from direct email contact with two or three companies before booking.
02How long is the flight?
Air time is 45 to 60 minutes for a standard flight, 60 to 75 for a deluxe. The whole morning — pickup to drop-off at the hotel — is about three hours.
03How many passengers in the basket?
Standard: 16 to 24, up to 28 in the cheapest category. Comfort: 10 to 16. Deluxe or private: 6 to 10.
04Is there a minimum age?
Most operators carry children from six years old. A few will take four- and five-year-olds. Children under four are almost never accepted. Over 85 usually requires a doctor’s note. Rules vary by operator; ask by email before paying.
05Can pregnant passengers fly?
No, in practice. Operators and insurance decline across the board.
06What happens if the flight is cancelled?
Rebook on the next morning at no change in price, or full refund if the traveller is leaving town. The weather and cancellations page covers the detail.
07How far in advance should a booking be made?
High season (April to June, September to October): three to seven days ahead. Winter and shoulder months: often the evening before is fine.
08What time does the flight actually leave?
Pickup at 5:00 am in summer, closer to 6:30 in deep winter. The operator confirms the exact pickup the evening before.
09What should a passenger wear?
Dress for a temperature 10°C below what feels right on the ground. Fleece or wool mid-layer, windproof shell. Closed shoes with grip. No heels.
10Cameras?
Phones, DSLRs, mirrorless are all fine. Drones are not permitted anywhere in the balloon zone during flight hours.
11Is there a toilet on board?
At the briefing building before the flight. Not in the basket. The flight is only an hour.
12Will motion sickness be a problem?
Rarely. There is no sway and almost no horizontal motion a passenger feels.
13Why is the same flight double somewhere else?
Resellers mark up. Also, basket category and season both move the actual flight-side price. Compare apples to apples.

15Can a flight be given as a gift?
Yes. Operators issue gift vouchers, usually valid for a year, redeemable for any morning the holder picks when they arrive. Request directly from the operator.
